KINK IS THE NEW BLACK

When I began writing, I glossed over the love scenes, imagining my mother one day reading my smut. I didn’t slam the bedroom door shut, but neither did I go into detail.

Slowly I dug deeper, literally and figuratively. I found my comfort zone and swore to my family I relied mostly on my imagination to conjure up the naughty (which wasn’t very naughty by anyone’s standards since I wrote for Cerridwen Press). Ellora’s Cave would ask for submissions on this, that or the other and I couldn’t go there until…

(Cue choir of angels singing.) Ellora’s Cave started their Branded line of erotic romance.
The spicy, naughty, and yes, sometimes kinky sex between a married couple. I thought to myself, I can do that. I can go there. And I did. I dipped my feet in the erotic pool and found the water to be fine. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a prude. I was a young adult in the 80s. I been there and done that—some of that.

I’ve moved on to erotic romance between an unmarried couple rekindling a romance from the past. Not exactly inebriated strangers bumping and grinding against a brick wall in a dark alley next to a dumpster. No toys, threesomes or fetishes (not that there is anything wrong with that). I have yet to reach the 5 level on the 1-5 heat index. But I have a feeling I will some day.

What’s your heat level, 1 being mild and 5 being wild?

  1. This is a great topic, Kelli.

For me it depends on what the characters in a story want and what they would do and wouldn't do. I go as hot as they want me to.

But some characters get into kink and some don't. Each story, each pair of h/h are different. It depends on what they show me about their desires and lives.

  2. Each story tells me if it wants to be erotic or not, but my internal hall monitor won't let me go to some kinky places.
